“Toni Meneguzzo is an internationally renowned photographer and anthropologist researcher.
Meneguzzo’s acclaimed career, which began 40 years ago, is characterized by innovation and research: Toni has developed unique photographic techniques, which have defined his iconic style. Like the large format Polaroids for fashion (20 × 25), which became his distinctive element, and later used by many other photographers. Like the current photographic sequences edited on video (stop motion).
The research also embraces his personal work, which includes projects with a strong anthropological content such as the Argentine rural bandits and painted Indian sacred cows, and others with a strong expressive impact such as the chromatic interventions in the landscapes, the trees of the Greek island Chrissi, the landscapes, the famous female nudes, mandalas.
Thanks to the long experience and great success in fashion, Toni has managed to extend his aesthetic sensibility to several other sectors including architecture and design photography, always with a surprisingly unusual point of view producing images with a precise vision of architecture, design and geometry.”

GAR0166 BOOKS: ‘dialogue with photography’ -Paul HILL & Thomas COOPER

'dialogue with photography' -Paul HILL & Thomas COOPER
DESCRIPTION:
The classic interviews with the men and women who shaped so much of 20th-century photography.
In the early 1970s, Paul Hill and Thomas Cooper carried out an extraordinary series of interviews. More than 20 photographers participated: Ansel Adams, Man Ray, Cecil Beaton, Brassa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertesz, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, George Rodger, Robert Doisneau, Herbert Bayer, Henry Holmes Smith, Helmut Gernsheim, Brett Weston, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Eliot Porter, W. Eugene Smith, Laura Gilpin, Paul Strand, Imogen Cunningham, Wynn Bullock, Minor White, and Beaumont Newhall. Paul Hill and Thomas Cooper began to interview some of the ‘movers and shakers’ of 20th-century photography when they were teaching colleagues at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in the 1970s. Paul went on to head that course and Thomas, originally from California, settled in Scotland where he founded the highly influential fine art photography course at Glasgow School of Art. He, like Paul, has exhibited all over the world and has work in international collections. He is currently research professor at GSA. Paul created the first residential photography workshop in the UK and later one of the first MAs in photography. Awarded an MBE in 1996, his extensive archive was acquired by the Library of Birmingham in 2004.

Chapter 2
The Mother Tongue

The making of English is the story of three invasions and a cultural revolution. In the simplest terms, the language was brought to Britain by Germanic tribes, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes influenced by Latin and Greek when St Augustine and his followers converted England to Christianity, subtly enriched by the Danes, and finally transformed by the French‑speaking Normans.

From the beginning, English was a crafty hybrid, made in war and peace. It was, in the words of Daniel Defoe, ‘your Roman‑Saxon‑Danish‑Norman English’. In the course of one thousand years, a series of violent and dramatic events created a new language which, by the time of Geoffrey Chaucer, was intelligible to modern eyes and ears without the aid of subtitles.

The English have always accepted the mixed blood of their language. There was a vague understanding that they were part of a European language family, but it was not until the eighteenth century that a careful investigation by a gifted amateur linguist began to decipher the true extent of this common heritage.
The Common Source

In the early days of the Raj, Sir William Jones, a British judge stationed in India, presented a remarkable address to the Asiatick Society in Calcutta, the fruits of his investigations into ancient Sanskrit. A keen lawyer, Jones had originally intended to familiarize himself with India’s native law codes. To his surprise, he discovered that Sanskrit bore a striking resemblance to two other ancient languages of his acquaintance, Latin and Greek. The Sanskrit word for father, transliterated from its exotic alphabet, emerged as pitar, astonishingly similar, he observed, to the Greek and Latin pater. The Sanskrit for mother was matar; in the Latin of his school days, it was mater. Investigating further, he discovered dozens of similar correspondences. Though he was not the first to notice these similarities, no one before Sir William Jones had studied them systematically. The Sanskrit language, he announced to the Asiatick Society on that evening of 2 February 1786, shared with Greek and Latin a stronger affinity … than could possibly have been produced by accident; so strong, indeed, that no philologer could examine them all three, without believing them to have sprung from some common source, which, perhaps, no longer exists

GAR0242 BOEK: ‘de Megalietenbouwers’, Francis HITCHING

 'de Megalietenbouwers', Francis HITCHING
