6198 MALTA -‘The Beheading of St John the Baptist (Caravaggio)’

the beheading of St John the Baptist by Caravaggio

description:
Completed in 1608 in Malta, the painting had been commissioned by the Knights of Malta as an altarpiece; it was the largest altarpiece which Caravaggio would ever paint. It still hangs in St. John’s Co-Cathedral, for which it was commissioned and where Caravaggio himself was inducted and briefly served as a knight. Caravaggio’s service to the Order was brief and troubled, however, as he was soon a fugitive from justice, having escaped while imprisoned for an unrecorded crime. When Caravaggio was defrocked in absentia as a “foul and rotten member” by the Order about six months after his induction, the ceremony took place in the Oratory, before this very painting

teenagers at Tiananmen at night

“The Tiananmen, or the ´Gate of Heavenly Peace´, is a monumental gate in the centre of Beijing, widely used as a national symbol of China. First built during the Ming dynasty in 1420, Tiananmen was the entrance to the Imperial City, within which the Forbidden City was located. Tiananmen is located to the north of Tiananmen Square, separated from the plaza by Chang’an Avenue”.

1052 BANARAS: “at the Manikarnika well”

Life and death, creation and destruction: one experience in Banaras. No pilgrim will forget to visit the sacred pond just above the Manikarnika cremation ground. It is exactly at this spot that Vishnu produced the energy that created the world. With his sweat the pond was filled and when Shiva saw the splendour of creation and danced his earring (manikarnika) fell into the pond.
Carana paduka (Chakrapushkarini)
Between the Manikarnika pool and the ghat is a small pavilion where a marble tablet can be found with a footprint of Shiva.

pfs1004 BANARAS: traffic is a jugler-game at Godowlia

In India and in Banaras we witness not only a tremendous increase in the population. People also undergo the benefits and consequences of a fast-growing economy. As in many Indian cities, a strong municipality in Banaras will have to decide to keep buses and cars out of the city centre that was originally built for pedestrians.
